In this post I am delving into many of the symbolic meanings and magical history of birthstones, exploring their unique meanings and symbolism. Similar to the exploration of Birth Trees found in the Celtic Birth Tree Guide, birthstones have been cherished for generations for their connection to our individual characteristics.

What are Birthstones?
Birthstones are gemstones that are related with each month of the year, with each stone holding unique qualities and meanings. The tradition of wearing a gemstone connected with the month of our birth can be traced back to ancient times, with different cultures attributing various symbolic meanings and protective powers to specific gemstones based on the month of a person's birth.
People have felt connected to birthstones throughout history because of long held beliefs that wearing or carrying the stone can bring luck, protection, and aid wellbeing. Birthstones have also been supportive as a physical touchstone or talisman, worn to guide us as we tap into our inner strengths and abilities.

What is My Birthstone?
There are two main birthstone lists recognised today which can guide us as we discover which gemstone is connected to the month of our birth:
Modern Birthstones: Established in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewellers, these are the most commonly used birthstones today.
Traditional Birthstones: These date back hundreds of years and have various historical and cultural associations.

JANUARY BIRTHSTONE - GARNET
Beginning the year with a vibrant burst, the garnet symbolises peace, prosperity, and good health. It is believed to foster strong relationships, encouraging harmony and trust.
